Friday Reads: Monsters and Men

This week marked my first week of Fall term in my graduate program. From here on out, it’s likely that Friday Reads will deal almost entirely with assigned reading. I’m hoping I’ll get to sneak a few leisure reads into my schedule here and there, but between course assignments and that new No Man’s Sky update I still need to check out for myself, I may not get much leisure reading done before Christmas break.

Friday Reads: So It Begins

Grad school classes begin on Monday, and it appears no one has informed my anxiety disorder. So far I’m pretty calm about it, maybe even excited. I spent some time this week reviewing my syllabus for Literary Theory, and I’m beyond stoked for this class. The entire month of November will be spent on Feminist Theory and Gender/Queer Theory, which I am considering an early holiday gift from my professor. He also informed us that skimming most of our assigned readings is acceptable and expected, so we’re friends now. It’s fine.

I haven’t heard anything from my other professor yet, but I’m not worried; class doesn’t actually begin until Monday so there’s still time.

Friday Reads: The End is Nigh

This week, I still have three books on my Currently Reading list, and you may notice some familiar titles. Two, in fact. I finished McCahan’s The Lake Effect already and I’m working on the review post for that, though the way the scheduling falls, it’ll actually be September before that review post goes up!

I haven’t made much of a dent in my Currently Reading list, mainly because my summer is drawing quickly to a close; my graduate classes start back up on the 14th, so my reading-for-pleasure time will be cut down drastically. My video gaming time, however, will be basically eliminated, and apparently my brain realized that for the first time on Monday, and so I’ve spent every free moment I have frantically playing No Man’s Sky. (I love that game, don’t @ me)

Friday Reads: How to Read Three Books at Once

A wild RECURRING POST appears! (Hint: Use FOLLOW, it’s super effective)

Bailey Poland, author of Haters: Harassment, Abuse, and Violence Online, does a weekly #fridayreads on Twitter, and I love following it. She RTs dozens of really interesting-sounding books every week, which is good for my reading horizons but bad for my TBR list, bookshelves, and wallet. (Full disclosure: I have not yet read Poland’s book.)

So, in the spirit of creating More Content, I’d like to start a weekly Friday Reads post of my own. Now that I’ve moved Tuesday Reviews Day to every-other-week, it’s much easier to stay ahead of schedule on reviews, but it makes it a bit harder to share what I’m reading with you in real time. I do have the Goodreads widget in the left rail, but this will give me a chance to expand on that a little more, without making you wait weeks for a full review.
